| Cartoon Stories by San | ||
Radnor Wentworths Theory of Friendship![]() | The original Radnor Wentworth cartoon story. | Is picking up women an intellectual activity? And why do we lose friends, anyway? The copyright on the web version of this story says 2003, but it's really a minor update and webification of a print story done in 1990. There's also a separate page with press reviews and my notes about the story (accessible from any of the story pages). |
The Hurricane![]() | Sans most popular cartoon story. | This story has received the most favorable feedback from readers. (Of course its been around for a while.) Its a tightly scripted tale that blends elements of Buddhism and Film Noir. An unlikely combination but see for yourself. There's also a separate page with press reviews and my notes about the story (accessible from any of the story pages). |
River Journey![]() | A cartoon story in verse form. | This dream nightmare, actually gives new meaning to waking up in a sweat. If you harbor any delusions that your life has a purpose, read this and youll get over it. You like nightmares, misery, and existential angst, dont you? Sure you do. Try to stay calm, and bring a towel. Theres also a separate page with press reviews and my notes about the story (accessible from any of the story pages). |
Psychology Cant Help![]() | A brooding cartoon sequence thats not exactly a story. | Come on, fess up: all those fancy shrinks havent helped you one bit, have they? I thought not. This tale is the Apotheosis of Neurosis. Not exactly a story more like a cartoon rumination on Civilization and Its Discontents (oh, wait, Freud already used that title. Rats!). Frankly, this is the least popular of my web cartoon stories possibly because it has no plot but some people seem to, ah, relate to it. Dont tell your shrink: it might not fit into his world view. I gotta go. Theres also a separate page with press reviews and my notes about the story (accessible from any of the story pages). |

| About San | Biographical information about the creator of this web site. | A few words about who I am and what kind of work I do. |
| How to Contact San | Contact information. | A cartoon-illustrated list of ways that will and will not work to get in touch with me. Who says contact pages have to be boring? |
| Site Map | Youre already here: the Table of Contents for Sanstudio.com. | This is just a temporary placeholder for the expanded site map I'm building. It will go online along with the expansion of this web site that I'm working on. |
| Tech Notes for Art Directors | ||
| Main Page of Tech Section | Lists the tech notes currently available, mostly about web, prepress, or other art-technology issues. | Long before I first became obsessed with computers (in the early 1980s), I was doing experiments with oil paints, traditional prepress, and so on. Naturally, when computers came along my technology obsessions blossomed. I currently have many thick looseleafs (looseleaves?) filled with my notes on art-tech subjects, mostly of the computerish kind. The question is how much Ill actually put online webifying the stuff is a lot of work. Stay tuned. |
| Graphic File Formats Chart | An annotated list of the major graphic file formats used in web and prepress development. | This is a subject Ive taught many times at the now-defunct Boston Computer Society; at the also-now-defunct Summer Computer Institute; at a technical college and several private training schools (of both the defunct and non-defunct variety); and most recently at a computer club meeting at MIT. (MIT is definitely not defunct.) This list (with comments, naturally) is a small bit (pun intended) of my lecture notes. It will grow. |
| Why Convert Raster to Vector? | A graphical demonstration of the advantage of converting some raster images into vector format. [PDF file, about 89k.} | Full title: Why do we trace raster images into vector form? It stars an ape of the species Pongidae Hollywoodus. Experienced art directors already know about this, but it provides a good visual overview for the uninitiated. PDF file; can be printed, and may be redistributed for free under some circumstances (write and ask). |
| Graphic Image Data Types | A visual demonstration of the main raster and vector data types. [PDF file, about 480k.} | This sheet shows Daniel the dog detective (star of my cartoon story The Hurricane) reproduced in three different raster (or paint) formats: grayscale, bitmap halftone, and bitmap line art; as well as in vector (or draw) format. Includes brief descriptive material. PDF file; can be printed, and may be redistributed for free under some circumstances (write and ask). |
